29th April: Home vs FC Barcelona
|
And so to the critical moment in which a season's Continental efforts will either continue joyously on towards Eastern Europe or end with the all to familiar misery of elimination. With it standing at 0-0 after the first leg any sort of score draw proves fatal to Manchester United's cause. 0-0 would take it to a treacherous period of extra time and in the freakish event that no goals were scored, a penalty shoot-out would determine who will be sipping vodka wearing a furry hat in Red Square in three weeks time.
Barcelona have visited Manchester three times and twice gained score draws at Old Trafford. 2-2 in 1995 and 3-3 1998 both of which would do them nicely tonight. But in 1984 they received a most famous pummelling. After trailing 2-0 from the 1st Leg in the Cup Winners Cup Quarter finals, Captain Marvel Bryan Robson led United to a famous 3-0 victory in frenzied Old Trafford atmosphere that many have said was the best ever.
On the road in La Liga this season the Nou Campers have won only 4 times. But in the Champions League they fair much better having beaten Stuttgart 2-0, drew 0-0 with Rangers, drew 2-2 with Lyon, won 3-2 at Celtic and 1-0 at Schalke. On English soil in recent years, FCB have had more wins than defeats. Last season they won 1-0 at Anfield but lost 1-0 at Chelsea. In 2006 they won 2-1 at Chelsea but in 2005 were thumped 4-2 against the Blue Londoners. Before that Barca won 2-0 at Newcastle in 2003 and a sumptuous 3-1 at Liverpool in 2001.
Last week a tentative United were outplayed in the 1st Leg at the Nou Camp by the Barca midfield with Xavi and Deco doing the passing and Yaya Toure (younger brother of Arsenal's Kolo Toure) doing the tackling.
Barca coach Frank Rijkaard is devoted to the 4-3-3 formation and he is unlikely to change even for a trip to European football's most imposing football fortress.
With a front three of Henry out on the left wing, Messi on the right and Eto'o in the centre it allows the two wide players to drop back when needed. Rijkaard will have his captain Carlos Puyol back and by jove they'll need him with Rafael Marquez suspended and their defence famously shaky. Lionel Messi will obviously be the key man if the Catalans are to do any damage. But is he fit enough? Is the little lad on top form for such a mammoth task after spending so long out on the treatment table?
The worry for United is if Barca score first early on, United will face the prospect of needing to score twice. However this scenario may be preferable than say, defending a 1-0 lead only to concede late with not enough time left to score a winner. United enemies may also draw disturbing parallels with the year 2000. The Reds grabbed a 1st leg 0-0 draw away to against another Spanish side, Real Madrid, another team supposedly on the wane. Yet the underdogs produced a veritable wonder show to send United to a shock 3-2 defeat in the 2nd leg at Old Trafford.
United can surely not play as negatively as they did in the Nou Camp. Their attacking instincts will smell blood because they know the Catalans defence is weak. Sir Alex knows his side have to win and the best way to do that is batter Barca in the Manchester United traditional way. It will not be all an out gung-ho assault mind, Rijkaard will not allow his team to make the same mistake Roma did last April. Fergie will demand a combination of guile, pace, accurate quick passing and defensive solidity that the Reds have relied on so far in Europe.
Weedalis prophesizes a close game, as all the home knock-out matches have been at Old Trafford this season. But ultimately I have to side with the Red warriors of Manchester to triumph. Surely this year, with a dazzling array of talents it is time to seize the moment, to return to a European Final and put Manchester United back on the stage where this great club belongs?

Home vs The Cockney Hammers
|
I wonder what the final home game of last season was? West Ham!!! What a most ungodly conincidence!!! United received the Premiership title that day but alas the newly crowned champions went down 1-0 to a Carlos Tevez goal but it was hardly the most enthusiastic performance by a home team that was in a celebratory mood. Sadly after recent events there will be silveraware be handed out today but it is a must win game for the home team this time around.
For the Hammers it has been a much easier going season than last were relegation stalked them like a cockney killing predator. This term they have only been in the relegation zone for one week and that was the very 1st week of the season!!! They have been dead centre 10th in the table for 20 weeks of the season so far, the very definition of middle of the road.
Some people are never happy it seems as Alan "Curbs" Curbishley has been oft harangued for his team's lacklustre performances in the second half of the season. It has been claimed his Hammers have exhibited signs of "Charlton syndome" werest they switch off once safety has been secured. Yet my analysis shows of their 13 victories so far they have won 6 matches since the midway point in the season - hardly a mastodonic decline by any measure?
Perchance it may have been 3 consecutive 4-0 drubbings in a row to Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs that irked the bubble blowers but there also be'th many rumours that the Eastenders are unhappy at Curbs drab style of play. This year they have bagged only 37 goals in the League and though the Irons have not won much silverware in their history, their fans take pride from an attractive and entertaining style of play. Curbishley's reputation has not been helped by shoddy signings such as Craig Bellamy and Kieron Dyer who turned out to be the injury ridden flops 99.9% of people predicted they would be.
Dean Ashton is top scorer and will be trying to penetrate a United home defence that has allowed just 6 net bulges all season. West Ham have played 4-4-2 for the lions share of the campaign so we can expect Bobby Zamora or Carlton Cole to line up beside Ashton.
West Ham have won the last three league encounters with Manchester United and no other team in England, nay the world, can claim this!!! They also have recorded two shock victories in the Premiership history at OT, last season and a 1-0 win in 2001. The next OT Hammers upset after 2001 is all the way back in 1986 in the old 1st Division and these are their only 3 triumphs in 45 years of visiting Manchester's Red Giant! Forget the previous three defeat ridden results, last season was not a proper match and United were downright sloppy in the other two - they will not be today and will be finely focused with laserlike intensity on the task ahead. Fergie's boy's will return to their usual Hammer smashing form once again with a soild home win.

Away vs Brucie's Wigmakers
|
Down to the final day!!! Heavens above, a most tense and unsavoury scenario indeedy....No matter what happens for United, Wigan gaffer and Manchester United legend Steve Bruce will consider this campaign a most goodly success. He took over on 23rd November 2007 with the little team languishing in 19th place after the miserable failure of Chis Hutching's reign. The man who replaced Paul Jewell had lost six in a row in the league and only had 8 points when the blackest of sacks was placed on his head. The Latics looked doomed yet Brucie was able to work some magic and suddenly results began to change. A 5-3 home win over Blackburn, a 1-1 at Liverpool and a 1-0's over Newcastle and Derby boosted confidence.
By the start of February they were in 15th place and have never dropped below it since. Now here they sit in May, comfortably above the relegation zone and looking ahead to a fourth season in the top flight in 2008-2009. Defensively, Wigan have conceded less than their relegatory rivals, which is just as well as only Middlesbrough and Derby have scored less than
Brucies boys this season.
As well as scoring a vital goal in the title race denying Chelsea a home win in the dying seconds, Emile Heskey has defied all known logic to maintain his career in top flight football. Heskey is usually lined up with Marcus Bent up front and Bent is a man of many dubious talents. As well as footy playing he is apparently a semi-professsional disc jockey (or DJ as young people call them) and what is known in popular music circles as a "rapper" with the stage name "MC Bender". Lets hope today he doesn't beat Van Der Sar with any benders!!! Defender Paul Scharner and ex Man City forward Antoine Sibierski have chipped on with goals as well but messers Vidic, Ferdinand and co should not be overly worried about the home side's attacking prowess.
Wigan's JJB stadium is hardly the most intimidating venue with its open corners and vast swathes of empty seat-age. The United players will be more worried about the state of the pitch which is used for rugby league's Wigan Warriors. The beastly game of rugger has taken a ghastly toll on the grass and was most mischievous when poor little Arsenal were unable to play their passing game and stuttered to a 0-0 draw. Hopefully United will not come unstuck in the quagmire but it is worth noting the home side have only lost twice at home since Bruce took over.
Wigan do not draw the biggest fanbase and there is sure to be a healthy red following out today. United have won every single time they played Wigan, a mere six occasions has produced 16 goals for MUFC and only 3 for Wigan. The Lactics will want to give their fans a good send off for the final day but surely Bruce will not want to spoil his old gaffers' day? With Europe out of the way and a week of rest from the previous game thankfully I foresee it will be a comfortable win for the United to clinch the title in style. Phew thank goodness for that!!!
