"A Classic Cup Final"

This was to be the first FA Cup Final United had played for 39 Years. The last final had been an unexciting affair, however, this game is recalled as being one of the finest ever seen with displays of skillful attacking football and fine sportsmanship. It was also Matt Busby's first trophy as manager of Manchester United. On the day United wore their change kit of blue, like they did again in 1968.

Blackpool took the lead in the 12th minute with a penalty taken by Shimwell. In the 28th minute United managed to level the score when confusion between Hayward and Robinson allowed striker Jack Rowley to shoot home United's first goal of the game. Blackpool went in front again 35 minutes into the game when Mortensen scored courtesy of a free kick by the great winger Stanley Matthews.

The second half saw United level and then take the lead with 3 goals in 14 minutes. In the 69th minute, Rowley managed to dodge two defenders to head home a free kick that had been given to Morris. The 3rd goal was scored by Stan Pearson after he had been recieved the ball from Anderson and fired the ball past Blackpool's keeper, Farm.

The 4th and final goal was scored by Anderson, his shot found the net via a pass from Kelly. United captain Johnny Carey went up to get the cup and cap a superb day's football. Stanley Matthews was denied a cup winners medal this day but he would finally get one in the 1953 final. This United side would eventually win the League championship in 1952 after finishing second for 4 out of 5 years.
