Evolution of Club badge

1998 - Present

McCleery's Manchester United Zone

No longer a football club? In July 1998 the then Manchester United PLC decided to remove the words "Football club" for image and branding purposes. The move has proved unpopular with hardcore fans. Badge is also given a 3D look.

1993 - 1998

In the 1990s with Umbro making the kits, the badge is remodelled to look more modern.

1970 - 1993

The Red Devil arrives on match programmes at the start of the 1970-71 season as we can see here: www.unitedreview.co.uk 1970. Why the Red Devil? Click here to find out

The badge appeared on shirts in 1972. It stayed in this design for over twenty years. For a while in the mid 1980's the two curly bits on the top were replaced by Adidas boots.

1960's

This badge never appeared on shirts but appeared in programmes/merchandise during the mid to late 1960's in monochrome red as seen here: www.unitedreview.co.uk 1968-69 or monochrome black as seen here www.unitedreview.co.uk 1969-70.

It features the ship and lines from the Manchester Coat of Arms and two roses representing the County of Lancashire. Technically it should be red roses but it is thought they were officially yellow. However printing limitations prevented this in the match programme, so they are coloured white.

Up until 1960's

For many years the club had no specific badge and the City of Manchester Coat of Arms was used - but only on cup final shirts. Until 1976 it was worn on United shirts in all FA Cup finals and the 1968 European Cup final. It is still worn today on official Manchester United 1st team blazers.

"Concilio et Labore" - loosely translated from Latin means "Wisdom and effort". The ship represents the city's trading base and the Manchester Ship Canal. The three lines are for three local rivers, the Medlock, Irwell and the Irk. The blue globe with yellow Bees symbolises work and industry. The two red roses represent the County of Lancashire.

McCleery's Manchester United Zone One exception is the 1958 FA Cup final where the club had a special one-off badge with a phoenix rising from the flames to celebrate the club's miraculous rebirth from the Munich Air Crash, only 3 months earlier that same year.
