The
Treble
United are the
only English team ever to have won the European Cup, Premier League and FA Cup
in the same season (as if you didn't know).In fact the 1999 treble is the first
treble achieved in any of the five major leagues in Europe (Italy, England, Germany, Spain, France). Will
it ever be repeated by United or others? The answer is very probably no.
| Turnbull,
Sandy: 1906-1914
Scottish centre forward Sandy Turnbull was part of the first great United team in the early part of the 20th century. He played firstly for Manchester City but in 1905 City were found making illegal payments to players and the entire squad was suspended from playing football. When the ban was lifted in 1906, Turnbull moved across the city to Manchester United, accompanied by Billy Meredith, Herbert Burgess and Jimmy Bannister.
Turnbull and Meredith, along with players like Charlie Roberts and Dick Duckworth helped the Reds win their first League championship in 1908 and again in 1911. In the 1909 FA Cup Final Turnbull scored the only goal in the 1-0 win against Bristol City. In the 1908 season he scored 27 goals in 25 games. In 1914 he was accused of match rigging and suspended for life but it mattered little as he would be killed in World War I in France on May 3rd 1917, serving with the British Army.
