FA Cup

United are the record holders of the FA Cup having won it ten times, four of those wins came in the 1990s.
(FA Cup 1909-2006). The competition, once the highlight of the domestic season has become sadly overshadowed by the Premiership and European Champions League. United's highly disputed withdrawal in 1999 to participate in the World Club Tournament only helped further the decline.

Still, United have had some classic FA Cup moments down the years: The epic semi against Arsenal in 1999, the 2-1 semi-final win over Liverpool in 1985, the 3-3 draw with Crystal Palace in the 1990 final and the 1948 final against Blackpool is rated by those who saw it as one of the all-time classics.

Mark Hughes last minute strike against Oldham in the 1994 semi, Ryan Giggs goal against Arsenal in 99 and Eric Cantona's late winner against Liverpool in 1996 are some of the greatest United moments ever. The 4-0 Final win over Chelsea in 1994 secured the clubs first ever Double while the 4-0 Final win in 1983 over Brighton was at the time the highest recorded since the 1930's. As underdogs in both the dramatic 1985 Final against Everton, and the 1977 Final with Liverpool, United triumphed against the odds and wrecked the "Treble" dreams of the then Merseyside champions.

Far East, The

Rupert Murdoch was eager to use United as a weapon in his TV conquest of Asia. Although his bid failed, United directors have similar aims. Manchester United are massive in East Asian countries like China, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Singapore. United have plans for a Megastore in Jakarta and Singapore and no doubt Hong Kong, Tokyo and Shanghai will follow. Manchester United have unrivalled popularity in this economic area, although Real Madrid are not far behind given their recent "Galacticos" strategy.

FC United of Manchester

The takeover by Malcolm Glazer in 2005 proved the 'straw that broke the camel's back' for some of Manchester United's most diehard fans. Partly in opposition to the American and partly in a response to a dissallusionment with modern football's obsession with money, they decided to start up a completely new club altogether. It was formed in June 2005 and nearly 3000 people pledged money to a club that will be run by the its members, in a similar fashion to the original inspiration, AFC Wimbledon.

The name "FC United of Manchester" was chosen with 44% of the vote, "FC Manchester Central" and "AFC Manchester 1878 being the other choices. Karl Marginson was appointed the club's inaugural manager and took them to promotion in the first season. They have been promoted every year since their foundation winning both Divison 1 and 2 of the North West Counties League.

The team are currently in the Northern Premier League Division One North and play their home games at Bury FC's 12,0000 capacity Gigg Lane. They regularly attract the highest attendances in the division and average around 2,500. The club plans to build its own stadium and reach the Football Conference North by 2009. Sir Alex Ferguson has been quite critical of FC United and has questioned the motives of its founders.

The League hierarchy is as follows

North West Counties League Division 2
North West Counties League Division 1
Northern Premier League Division 1 - FC United
Northern Premier League (Unibond League)
Football Conference North
Football Conference National
League 2
League 1

Forlan, Diego: 2001-2004

It was said he was a striker in the Jurgen Klinsmann mould, strong, quick, two-footed and a scorer of spectacular goals. True, but he missed a lot of seemingly easy goal-scoring opportunities that made him utterly unreliable. On arrival in January 2001 for £7 million from Independiente, Diego impressed the United fans with his never say die attitude, speed and skill.

But it took him 8 months to score his first goal, 27 appearances after his debut - a late penalty against Maccabi Haifa ended the drought. Things picked up with more goals and his goal celebration involved taking off his shirt. It became a famous incident when he scored his next goal at home to Southampton, his late 25 yard effort won the game 2-1 but he couldn't get his shirt back on. Forlan rejoined the action bare-chested, racing to make one timely tackle inside his own box to the delight of the home fans before being ordered to the touchline to replace the missing top.

There was better to come when Forlan bagged two goals at Anfield to claim a famous 2-1 win for United. The first was the result of a crazy blunder by Liverpool goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek who let the ball slip through his arms to leave Diego with a tap-in. Diego was now a cult hero and had his own song "He comes from Uruguay, he made the Scousers cry!!!" There was even better to come when he scored a cracking last gasp winner at home to Chelsea in January.

However it was downhill from then on. His appearances became more limited and eight goals in 2003-2004 season did little to allay fears that he was not Manchester United quality. In the end it was his inablity to score simple tap-in's that damaged the Uruguan's prospects. Forlan left in a £1.5 million transfer to Villarreal in August 2004. He learnt his lesson though, this time he scored on his debut!!!!!

Fortune, Quinton: 1999-2006

Quinton Fortune left his South Africa home at the age of 14 to try his luck abroad. His search for success took him to Tottenham Hotspur before he moving on to Atletico Madrid.

He was noticed by the South African national manager and played for South Africa in the 1988 African Nations' Cup, as well as featuring in all his country's three games at the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France. He arrived at Old Trafford in summer of 1999 for £2 million.

With plenty of pace, natural balance and good ball skills Fortune was a promising star in his first United season. Scoring twice in the Maracana in the World Club Championship and Premiership goals against Bradford and Middlesbrough showed he had an eye for goal and his performance on the left wing away to Valencia gave hope of bright future at United.

Fortune's 2000-2001 season was heavily disrupted by International duty with South Africa's Olympics and World Cup Qualifying and he missed half of the 2001-2002 season with a knee injury restricting him to 19 appearances (including as Sub).

The following season, Fortune had impressed in a central midfield role in the absence of the injured trio of Roy Keane, Nicky Butt and David Beckham. However his injury jinx struck again - a broken leg against Liverpool in November 2002 put him on the sidelines for three months by which time he found himself limited to appearances on the bench.

In 2003-2004 Quinton was a first team regular in the first half of the campaign making 33 appearances and scoring twice in Champions league games. As well as playing centre midfield and on the wing, he even found himself playing at left back when the reds were short of defensive cover.

But yet again disaster struck the unfortunate South African. This time it was a cartilage injury in training that put an end to his season in early March. He had a better campaign in 2004-2005, playing as a left back and left side of midfield he started 12 matches with 5 as sub.

Quinton showed impressive determination and spirit, a player with a good work rate, not afraid to get stuck in. He did however lack that little bit of creative quality to be anything other than a squad player at Old Trafford and in the summer of 2006 he left for Bolton Wanderers on a free transfer.
