Oceania
Manchester United
are very popular in Australia and New Zealand with numerous
supporters clubs throughout both countries. The 1999 summer
tour showed United's popularity down under and United has a
player-exchange deal (similar to one with Royal Antwerp) with
a local team in Sydney.
O'Farrell,
Frank: 1971-1972
Irishman O'Farrell is United's
only ever non UK born manager and succeeded Sir Matt Busby on 8th June 1971. The soft spoken man from County Cork had taken Leicester City to the Second Division title the previous year and seemed like a solid choice who would not suffer the same fate of Wilf McGuiness
Initially O'Farrell United got off to a flyer. He spent a large amount of money with Ian Storey-Moore and
Ted MacDougall each costing around £200,000 and Martin Buchan
£125,000 but it had been worth it. United were 5 points clear at the top of the table in Christmas
1971 with Charlton, Law and Best revitalised.
Sadly in the second half of the season the team went on a free-fall
run of defeats and ended up finishing 8th. The Irishman's job was also plagued by the off-the-pitch antics
of George Best which caused much unwanted media attention. Players also felt he was distant and unapproachable.
The following season
the Reds endured a disastrous start, taking ten matches to pick up their first win. After a 5-0 drubbing at Crystal Palace O'Farrell was sacked in December 1972 with Manchester United, European Champions only four season's previous, lying at the bottom of the table. He was succeeded by Tommy Docherty.
O’Farrell later managed Torquay and coached in the United
Arab Emirates.

| Olsen,
Jesper: 1984-1988
Much was expected of Jesper Olsen who
joined United in 1984 for £700,000 having already
twice won the Dutch championship with Ajax Amsterdam. Olsen was a classic Manchester United winger but his slight build and height meant he found it hard to adapt to English football in his first season. That said he still won a
winners medal in the famous 1985 1-0 FA Cup final victory against
Everton.
His wing-play was full of tricks and skills which made him a thrilling player to watch. However,
he was ultimately unable to do his talents justice in the
English game and Alex Ferguson soon lost faith preferring the more workmanlike talents of Colin Gibson and Ralph Milne. Olsen was sold to Bordeaux in 1988 and after retiring in 1992 went on to become a football agent.
